Material & Design
Being a lot thicker is not necessarily always better…the type of and gauge/density of the material being used are equally important. We have tried several combinations and are always researching ways of getting better. We currently use 3/32″ – 1/8″ neoprene sheet rubber, 60-70 Duro(durometer) and have found it to be great to work with and its composition has many great properties, such as resistance to UV, heat, gas, oil, and most chemicals.
The other thing to be aware of is that the size and shape of the guards are often different depending on the vendor or DIY.
At RAD RUBBER DESIGN, we don’t just cookie-cut the factory guards but instead, we add a little here and there to provide better coverage. However, on many models, we do not recommend covering up the small gap(s) around the area at the top of the shock tower as we believe it’s important to keep that area open as Toyota intended for heat dissipation from the engine/exhaust.
We make many other, usually, older models that are one piece and go all the way across, however, those engine bays are much larger and there is more airflow.
